Hybrid-RAST® RC-Paraglider from Para Aviation RC

RAST® is a technical design element patented by SWING which makes paragliding more predictable by dividing the paraglider canopy into different pressure zones. The glider behaves more stable and is easier to control, especially in turbulent conditions.
It also makes launching very easy. The question is not, "Why RAST®?", but "Why not?".

Even during my man-carrying days, I was always fascinated by RAST® gliders from the Swing company.

Herry Hoffner, an RC paraglider pioneer from the very beginning, started to gather his first experiences with RC paragliders in home-building several years ago. Herry has also laid the foundations for further developments in many other areas of the RC paraglider sector. Herry made his construction, the "Olympic", available to us with all his knowledge. This glider had no RAST® valves, but served as the basis for our developments.

The first step, however, was to contact the Swing company in order to be allowed to integrate their patented RAST® system exclusively into our RC sport paragliders.
With the contractual approval of the use of RAST® and the "Olympic" as a basis, we started our exciting further development of hybrid RAST® RC sports gliders with high aspect ratio and a low number of single skin cells.

The goal was to develop a hybrid glider which is always good-natured and easy to fly during take-off and in various flight phases, which already "marches" well in the normal flight phase and where the glide performance does not drop very much in the accelerated state. It should also have good and stable handling in the thermal position in the range of the lowest sink rate. We also wanted to keep the number of open, i.e. single-skin cells as low as possible in order to achieve maximum glide performance.

To meet these requirements, it was necessary to perform countless iterations of flow simulations of the canopy on the computer. The result is a profile strake with 4 to 6 different profiles in spanwise direction depending on the canopy.
We achieve a perfectly stretched profile nose, which additionally simplifies launching, by using Nitinol, a dimensionally stable nickel-titanium alloy with memory effect. This was a big challenge because we have very thin profiles with tight nose radii. The classic pocket for nylon rods cannot be adopted one-to-one for this.
The latest generation Edelrid Magix Pro Dry is used as the filler for our gliders.

The heart of the RAST® gliders, the RAST® valve, brings a lot of advantages in flight, but represents a high effort during the development phase and prototype construction. A larger number of prototypes are required for RAST® gliders compared to conventional gliders. This is because the overall design and also the tension distribution are mainly related to the RAST® valve. On a conventional prototype without RAST®, a lot can be changed afterwards. If something is wrong with the RAST®, it is not possible to intervene because it is installed inside the cell and a completely new prototype has to be built.

We are now in the final phase of development and are pushing ahead with the work that still needs to be done. More info to follow.
